Learn To Swim - Class Descriptions
Preschool
Preschool aged (4 years old and must be toilet trained and comfortable away from parent). No previous lessons, must be new to water. Class will provide an introduction to swimming and water safety.
Level I
Must have completed kindergarten and be reasonably comfortable in the water. Must be able to submerge entirely underwater. Must show basic breath control (blowing bubbles and holding breath while underwater) and alternating arm movements. Can do supported floating and kicking with a board and can safely enter and exit the pool. Other skills include streamline kicking and bobs.
Level II
Must be able to complete all Level 1 skills. New skills include retrieval of underwater objects, unsupported floating, and rhythmic breathing. Begin to work on freestyle and backstroke, underwater kicking, and treading water.
Level III
Must be able to complete all level 3 skills. New skills include introduction to breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Practice freestyle and backstroke until coordinated, freestyle breathing work on bilateral breathing.
Level IV
Must be able to complete all level 4 skills. New skills include sculling, pulldowns and turns. Combine butterfly kick with arms, and breaststroke kick with arms. Goal is to prepare swimmers to move up to JSL or Bronze group. Must be able to complete 1 lap of all strokes (butterfly with fins).
